To begin, examine this map of the land use and figure out what is behind each small cross (starting with the crosses on the circles).

As you can see, Brussels, like most big cities, is characterised by different uses of its territory:

	Housing
	Commercial areas
	Industrial areas
	Public buildings
	Road transport infrastructure
	Railway spaces

These uses can be found in different proportions and in different forms depending on whether one is closer to the centre or the periphery. As in most European cities, the centre-periphery gradient is a major element in understanding the organisation of life and urban forms.
