Connecting in a divided city? The combination of multiple political mandates
As you have learned, Brussels is characterised by the presence on its territory of different political 'arenas'. They are themselves linked to each other, in the sense that the same politician often wears several 'hats': he or she sits in different assemblies. Theoretically, a French-speaking inhabitant of Brussels could sit simultaneously in six assemblies and a Dutch-speaking inhabitant of Brussels in five assemblies.
The ability to combine several political mandates as a result of the interdependence of public authorities is today at the heart of various debates. However, it is not unique to Brussels. It is regularly observed in other countries, such as France. In order to give you an idea of the day-to-day work of a people's representative in Brussels, a mayor-parliamentarian from Brussels has kindly allowed us to consult his agenda. We suggest that you strictly follow it for a week.
