Brussels, capital of what?

Activity 5: Where are these people of Brussels based?

In the previous text, you saw that the name "Brussels" can be assigned to at least four different meanings:

1
The City of Brussels (the Pentagon and its extensions);
2
The Brussels-Capital Region (the 19 municipalities);
3
The Brussels morphological area (the BCR + its peripheral suburbs);
4
The employment catchment area of Brussels (an even larger metropolitan area).

With the help of what you've learnt, listen to the accounts of four people who travel in Brussels and try to find out whether they live in the City of Brussels, the Brussels-Capital Region or its employment catchment area.

Question 1

Michel's testimony:

Hello, my name is Michel, I'm 40 years old. I'm married and have two young daughters. I live with my family in the municipality where I was born, which I have never left. Every day, I walk to work, which is in the offices right in front of the Palais de Justice. I live only ten minutes away. I am involved in the political life of my municipality, which is, among other things, an administrative and tourist centre. In the evenings, my wife and I often go for walks around the Grand Place.

Question 2

Acelia's testimony:

Hello, my name is Acelia. I was born in Turkey but moved to Belgium at the age of three with my parents. I am married to Murat and we have three children who go to a Dutch-language school, which is the language of our municipality. My husband works in Brussels but I am a housewife. We live in Halle, in a large house with Murat's parents.

Question 3

Jeanne's testimony:

Hi, my name is Jeanne, I'm 28 years old. I finished my studies four years ago and bought a flat in Overijse. I obtained my law degree from the Université libre de Bruxelles. It wasn't easy, but now I work at a law firm in Watermael-Boitsfort, one of the nineteen municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region. If I want to take the train, I have to leave home at 8.00 a.m. to arrive at work at 9.00 a.m. I have a driving licence but I don't go by car because the road is often congested with commuters who, like myself, work in the city.

Question 4

Aurel's testimony:

Hi, my name is Aurel and I'm 17 years old. I live with my parents and two sisters in a flat on the fourth floor of a building in Molenbeek. My parents were born in Romania but my sisters and I were born in Belgium. I am in my final year of secondary school, which is located near our apartment. Before going to class, I take my little sisters to primary school, which is just two blocks away from home.
