Activity 5: The consequences of modernity in the Northern Quarter (before/after)
Brussels, a permanent construction site?
Activity 5: The consequences of modernity in the Northern Quarter (before/after)
Formerly a working-class district with simple houses squeezed together, the Northern Quarter - transformed into the "Manhattan Project" - had become the symbol of modern construction, with a vertical concentration of space and a dense road network.
You can observe these transformations in the following two aerial photographs. The photo on the left was taken in 1953. The one on the right was taken in 2019. By clicking on the crosses, you will discover the locations of a some streets that were reconfigured.
The following pictures show the transformation of these different streets. As you can see, the former district is unrecognisable today.
